A significant earthquake struck West Texas on Saturday, May 3, 2025, registering a magnitude of 5.4. The tremor occurred at 7:47 p.m. local time, with its epicenter located approximately 35 miles south of Whites City, New Mexico, near the Texas-New Mexico border.

Key Details:

Magnitude & Depth: Initially reported as 5.3, the U.S. Geological Survey later upgraded the earthquake's magnitude to 5.4. The quake occurred at a shallow depth of about 3.9 miles (6.3 kilometres).

Affected Areas: The shaking was felt across a broad region, including El Paso, Texas; Ciudad Juárez, Mexico; and parts of southeastern New Mexico. Residents reported noticeable shaking, with some describing it as the longest they had experienced in the area.

Aftershocks: The main quake was followed by at least two aftershocks, measuring 2.2 and 2.9 in magnitude.

Damage Reports: As of now, there are no reports of significant damage or injuries. Some residents noted minor structural issues, such as cracks in foundations.

Seismic Activity in the Region: This event is among the strongest recorded in Texas's history. Experts attribute the increased seismic activity in the region to natural fault lines and human activities, such as the deep injection of wastewater from oil and gas operations, which can elevate underground pressures and potentially trigger earthquakes.
